Experience the glamour of a society event when Ladies’ Day comes to the RLS Polo Club. Enjoy a chance to dress up in your finest and watch the people as much as the polo. There are prizes for best hat, best blazer, best picnic.

Enjoy a great day out for just £10 per car admission. Pay at the gate.

A great day out with friends or family, just turn up around 12.00 and bring a picnic. There will be someone on the gate to take £10 per car and direct you where to park. Then find a place beside the pitch and set up your picnic ready for the matches.

If you are really keen and don't wish to miss any of the action check the website the night before to see the time of the first game.

If you wish to have lunch in the clubhouse you must book in advance on 01926 811111.

Children of all ages are welcome. Most people do dress for the occasion although it is not essential. As a guide most people dress as they would for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. Still the most essential part of the day is that you have fun, but please bring sunshine if you can.

We'll have plenty to entertain the kids while you enjoy your picnic and a glass of wine. With our gates opening at 11am, in addition to the Polo itself, we'll have a whole host of activities from Magic Shows to Bouncy Castles, Face Painting to Balloon Modelling.

Matches are usually played between 12 and 4 with finals on a Sunday.

Rough Guide to Polo

The following will give you an idea of the basic rules of polo to help with your enjoyment of a match.

A tournament consists of a number of matches and is usually played over a Saturday and Sunday at RLS
A match is 4 or 6 chukkas RLS play 4 chukkas
A chukka lasts 7 minutes
A bell or hooter sounds at the end of 7 minutes up to 30 seconds of play will follow
Play starts with a throw in the teams line up facing each other and the umpire throws the ball in
Teams change ends after a goal is scored returning to the centre for another throw-in
The ground is called a pitch it can be up to 8 times the size of a football pitch up to 300 by 200 Yards
Each tournament has a handicap the higher the handicap the faster the polo. RLS has from 0 to 12 goal
Each team has 4 players
Each player has a handicap from -2 goal (beginner) to 10 goal (the best in the world). Handicaps are added together to make the team handicap
Teams are made up of professionals and amateurs.
Lower handicapped teams get a head start if you see a half goal on the scoreboard this is because of a handicap difference
There is a scoreboard in the centre/end of the pitch this also shows the chukka number being played
Equipment brown boots, knee pads, white jeans, a polo shirt, polo helmet and a mallet
Each player will have between 2 and 6 ponies per match ponies can only be used twice and must be rested between chukkas.
2 mounted umpires on the pitch there is also a referee watching from the side.
The mallet (stick) must be held in the right hand
The line of the ball and right of way the rules of polo are mainly concerned with the safety of the ponies and players. If you see someone leave a ball and can’t understand why, now you know.
Riding off players ride into each other shoulder to shoulder to push each other away from the ball.
Hooking players try to stop a successful shot by using their mallet to ‘hook’ and opponents stick to stop them hitting the ball.

In memory of our good friend David Heaton-Ellis we are supporting the Heaton-Ellis Trust.

The Heaton-Ellis Trust seeks to raise sufficient money to fund the purchase of a new generation DNA sequencing machine for the Neurological research team at King’s College Hospital and to then finance the research programme for the next 3 years.

The Charity has no overheads or administration costs to cover meaning that all money raised will pass directly to the appeal.

It doesn’t matter what you wear, jeans and trainers are fine, so long as you have fun.

However, on Ladies Day August 1st we encourage everyone to dress up in their finest to enjoy an Ascot-style day out. See ' Special events' for further details.

What about dogs?

Dogs are welcome however must be kept on a lead and kept under control at all times. Please be respectful to the other people and it goes without saying clear up any mess left behind.
